Odyssey ProType PT 82 Odyssey ProType PT 82 Putter We have gotten tons of emails from readers asking whether or not the putter Phil Mickelson used in the Master's would be released to the public. Well you guys will be happy to hear that today it was announced that it WILL be released. Odyssey has come out with what they are calling the Odyssey ProType PT 82 putter. Which is based after the design Phil used to win. It will be a Limited Edition model with only 164 being produced.82 in Right-hand and 82 in Left-Hand.
It will have the White Ice Insert with a tungsten behind the face and a single white alignment line similar to the model Phil putted with. They will be available on the website May 10 at 11 a.m. The Bad Part Unlike other manufacturers Callaway/Odyssey has never quite been able to most effectively take advantage of these situations in regards to marketing and implementation. Almost all their prototype limited edition putters fail to hold there value. So why is that? Odyssey has had quite a few limited edition putters in their time including the Happy Gilmore Hockey Stick 1 of 500 Putter and also many tour only models similar to other manufacturers.

Although they don't seem to get the recognition that many of these others do when it comes to the collector's models. When you think about limited edition putters.is Odyssey a name that comes to mind? Most likely not.
More then likely you are thinking Scotty, Bettinardi, etc. So why is it that the #1 Selling Putter maker doesn't get this same recognition when it comes to valuable putters on the collector's market? We have discussed this in detail here over the last week or so and this is the conclusion we came up with. Design - In the case of this new release they made the mistake of not making the putter like the actual putter Phil putted with. Big mistake in our opinion.if people are going to pay big money for a special collector's item like this they want the real deal.
Now will they sell all of them.more then likely.but will they hold there value.doubtful. Communication - there is a method for the madness of how to release limited edition putters and you can use Scotty as a great example of this.and another example was the release of the Limited Edition putters. Both do a great job.
Limited Edition Tapis
They leak info out over a period of time to sites like MGS and others slowly to grow the anticipation which creates a great demand for the product when it finally does get released to the public. And I can't tell you how many times they have had problems doing this just with our site much less other publications I am sure. Built For The Masses - Odyssey putters are everywhere.so are Scotty's but when you think of the 2 brands you think of one being more high-end and one being like we said for the masses. But you can be a little of both.
I will use the analogy of the brand Harley-Davidson. Most bike riders think that if you are a true 'Biker' you have to own a Harley.
They have the same feel in golf.if you are a true putter collector most think you have to have a Scotty putter. But in Harley-Davidson's case they are also now built for the masses. So they take advantage of both markets at the same time. But with Odyssey the term Limited Edition just does not carry the same meaning as a Limited Edition Scotty because they have not been able to bridge the gap between the two. So in the end when someone goes to sell a Limited Edition Odyssey putter the buyer on the other end immediately gets a feeling of the putter still being 'mass produced' and not a true 'collector's item', and therefore I feel this is one of the reasons the Odyssey Collector's Edition type models slip in value almost immediately after being released. So what do you think of the new Odyssey model and will you be buying?
This is silly. About the same as discussing Ricky Fowler’s haircut these days. Who cares how much a putter will resale for?
I have been golfing for almost 60 years and care about one thing when I buy a club: does it help my game. This is a great putter. One of the best I ever picked up. And I go back to Otis Chrissman and the Bullseyes of the ’50’s.
I don’t care if Phil Mickelson uses one like it, the same one, or one like Joe Schmoe the rag-picker uses. This P-82, P-857, PTA, or whatever the hell the thing reads on the bottom, is much better, along with many others I have had over the years, than anything Scotty Cameron ever dreamed up for you “collectors.” Talk about over-priced and over-hyped. Cameron putters are fine, but nothing to get excited about.
Want to collect something? Go collect paintings. By the way, if you are a REAL collector, I have a few Tom Stewarts somewhere in my garage.
(I threw that it to see if anyone out there really knows anything about collecting old clubs. So go – run quick – check it out on Google. But if you are interested, better have a lot of cash lying around.). I work for Callaway inc. For 26 years now and for everyone here who posted a comment about the putter not being the exact same one that phil used during the 2010 masters, well you all should go do some research before you say something you don’t know anything about.
This putter was designed down to the last spec. Of the exact replica phil used to win the 2010 masters. The only difference is the grip he had a black grip and the pt 82 comes with the white grip. Here’s a website of the exact clubs he used to win the 2010 masters. He won the masters. Questions for you TigerWoods from Callaway: 1.
Is there a tungsten weight behind the insert on the PT82’s? Is the finish the exact same? Were all the PT82’s 100% CNC Milled. Or were they skim milled from a forging? Is the engraving the exact same? Is the headcover the same?
Is the paintfill the same? Is the insert the EXACT same insert? Were all the PT82’s made by the same “Master Builder” that makes Phil’s models?
Is all the milling including the face milling the same? Is the weight the exact same? If the answer the all these questions is not YESthen that is what we were referring to.
So I worked for Odyssey before we were purchased by Tommy Armour Golf (American Brands, Inc) who then sold Odyssey to Callaway after TA’s Titanium irons disaster. We released a “Limited Edition” gold plated, leather grip, Rossie II which we only sold in Japan. Though I recommended Odyssey produce 500 of these putters – the powers that be at the time produced 6500 (and you wonder why TA failed?!). Anyway, I have the 30th putter of the 6500 made. Any of you golf junkies have ideas on what it may be worth? Thanks so much for this information I was told by the callaway rep that this was the actual “EXACT” copy of phils putter and I purchased this when I got the congratulations email. I was planning on replacing my GSS circle T with it.
If it where not for this site I would have wasted $500.00 +39 for S&H / TAX. I will instead put that money towards a LH bryant jolly roger putter. Thanks for the good information!!!! I should have known it was too good to be true I got duped by thinking I won something being eliglble and first in! Nice looking putter. But all this limited edition stuff.just for people with more money than sense and a silly obsession or want to show off!!!!!
You can get a great putter for £100-£150 in fact probably lessthe rest is down to technique. My personal taste is centre shafted putters, so I wouldn’t consider a putter like this anyway-I think you need very good technique to use it properly. Must Odyssey do make some nice putters-I prefer them to Scottys, I think the whole Scotty thing is like some kind of putter snobbery thing!!!
The Odyssey Dual Force 2 putters from Callaway are a development of the classic Dual Force designs and the DFX inserts. We were big fans of the DFX style and the new Dual Force 2 putters are even better as the new Stronomic insert now stretches the full width of the face ensuring much more consistency of strike. The insert in the DF 2's is quite firm and that has the added benefit of giving the all important sound feedback that you need for holing those vital putts. Ideal for the slower greens of Europe, or if you are using a soft ball, these Odyssey Dual Force 2 putters are the best insert putters around in our view. Shame there is no Two-Ball version, but I am sure it will come soon!
